Outfit Of The Day + DIY Style: Colorful Silk Scarf Dress with Chain Straps

Okay this is one of those dresses that I would have NEVER given a second glance to on the rack if I had not seen Kelly from The Glamourai style this so amazingly.  Hanging on the rack, with its shapeless form and ugly faux leather braided straps, I would have passed this over and not looked back (the website image doesn't help at all, either).

I love when big production bloggers find amazing things that us small production bloggers can afford and DIY.  Now, I'm pretty much flat-out copying Kelly's DIY and styling (well, about 6 years ago, I wanted to make a skirt from 2 silk scarves, but I never could find big enough scarves), but she did it so well, I bet lots of her readers are inspired.

Dress: Forever 21 {here}
Shoes: BCBG Max Azria "Agreice" {here} {and here} {last seen in this post}
Bag: Aigner, gift from my mom {similar style here} {last seen in this post}
Belt: Target

I promise Bandit wasn't trying to hump my leg, he just wanted to give it a hug. ;-)

DIY Chain Straps

I found an old belt in my closet - I used to love this belt, but I haven't worn it in at least 5 years, so I decided to take it apart.

Step 1
I used my pliers to pry open the jump rings.  There were two on each side, one small and one large.

Step 2
I decided to put the larger jump ring on the front of the dress.  I chose which chain I wanted to use, slid the chain into the jump ring, attached to the dress, and closed the jump ring with my pliers.

Step 3
Since I was satisfied with the length of the original straps, I measured my chain against that length.  I used my pliers to pry open the smaller connecting piece to shorten the chain.

Step 4
I connected the chain to the grommet on the back of the dress with the smaller jump ring, just like I did in the front.

Step 5
I repeated the process on the other side, which was a little longer because of the asymmetric neckline.

And that's it!!

Love how you have altered the dress. I have been on a search for this dress for weeks now but cannot find it anywhere - I am desperate to have it for my holiday to France. Have you seen it anywhere lately? I live in the UK and have tried calling the stores etc but without a product code they can't help. Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Love your blog, and the rabbit is the cutest. M x (

Maria, as far as I know, it's only sold at Forever 21 so if they're out of stock, then there's not much I can do to help. If you're into DIY, Kelly from The Glamourai made her own version from two scarves.
