It's the 4th annual Rock The Red Pump Project, an organization that raises awareness about the impact of AIDS on women and girls. Founded in March 2009 by Luvvie Ajayi and Karyn Watkins, Red Pump believes that if HIV affects one, it affects us all. They use the red shoe as a symbol of empowerment to represent the strength and courage of women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

This is my second year rocking the red pump and 2012's goal was to get 2,500 bloggers involved. The Red Pump Project aims to:

• Commemorate major awareness dates with various events or campaigns online and on the ground
• Partner with organizations doing work in HIV/AIDS in their initiatives and events around the country
• Get women around the country to “Rock the Red Pump™” both online and on the ground
• Be involved in getting 1,000 people tested nationally
• Raise funds for HIV/AIDS service organizations

Fashion is evolving, right? This blog helps me step out of my comfort zone and try new things. I saw this similar jacket (outfit #3) on Chloe a few months ago and loved the look! I had a tiny dinner party with my friend Jenn, who came over to talk banking and finance with David. I decided to use my nice china and crystal since it rarely gets taken out of the cabinets. I'm not that into Kate Spade for fashion, but I really love her dinnerware! I made coconut chicken, salad with homemade honey mustard vinaigrette, and strawberry shortcake.

Interesting story about those tarnished salt and pepper shakers (though I'm not supposed to give any names). A friend's sister used to work as as a personal assistant to a popular NYC boutique owner. He owned a house in Atlanta, as well as NYC, and decided to sell and move - the sister was able to keep a few things (various silver and crystal items). These shakers (plus a crystal bowl) made it to me because neither my friend nor her sister liked them, haha. Admittedly, they are a little gaudy, but I like them anyway. I'd love to know more history about them, as they're definitely antique. Based on the stamped hallmarks, my googling powers have just now determined they are sterling silver from silversmiths Suckling Limited, Birmingham, England, year 1925. Cool, wow, there's such a plethora of information of hallmarked silver on the internet - I never knew! And look what else I found - you can get your very own replica pair for £15 British pounds on eBay! :-P

Here I'm showin' off my new nail polish from OPI's Holland collection, "Wooden Shoe Like To Know," though I have a funny about one of the other shades, "Pedal Faster Suzi" (pics coming soon). When I was in Amsterdam last November, the public transit went on strike one of the days we were there and my friends wanted to rent bikes. I was hesitant - I haven't ridden in years and was never that good. Of course, I was the one in the back, trying to "pedal faster" to keep up with the group (and not run into pedestrians and cars, though I did run into a car :-/ yikes!). That nail polish name is definitely a tribute to someone like myself.

Happy Monday friends! When I went to Target on the 5th to check out the Jason Wu collection, I discovered this belt on the clearance rack for $4. Nevermind it's a size large; that just lets me find creative things to do with the excess. I just love the sparkles!

Stuck-On Bandit

I have to share this funny tidbit from a couple of nights ago. I was at my computer and saw Bandit running and wiggling around the room. Since bunnies are prone to spastic marathons, I didn't think much of it initially. I looked over to see him biting at his chest amidst the running and wiggling. As I get closer to inspect, I notice something bright and red on his chest. At first I though it was blood, but after more examination, I realized he got into a sticker! Poor Bandit was frantically and unsuccessfully trying to nibble this sticker off his chest and wouldn't let me help. I finally tricked him into letting me pick him up and pried the sticker off - I'm sure that didn't feel pleasant. But after I set him down, he was (obviously) much calmer.

I realized the sticker held together my Valentine's chocolate box from this post. How he got it, I don't know. But silly rabbit, he does have a sweet tooth! And of course, being a meanie, I had to instagram him in his time of distress!

Brrr, winter finally came to Atlanta this past weekend. I had fully intended to do a shot without the coat but changed my mind once I got outside. Here's another recent thrifted goodie - I found this snakeskin purse at a local consignment shop and loved the little gold handle plus shoulder strap chain. Once I got it home, I discovered another interesting "left behind" inside it - an old business card for Wexner's / Houston • San Antonio • Atlanta, with the Atlanta address and a handwritten name and number. I googled this business and discovered it opened in 1969 in Atlanta, but alas, no longer exists. After a bit more googling, I found out that The Wexner Brothers, establish by Philip and Henry Wexner in the 1930s, started leased shoe department operations in larger stores. Throughout the years, they flourished and expanded and eventually started their own stores. In the 1980s, they bought the Chicago-based Joseph stores and have since undergone growth in luxury designer shoes, handbags, jewelry, apparel, and cosmetics.

Here are another pair of Talbot's shoes I ordered for less than $40 (after Extra Petite Jean shared an internet code a few weeks ago). This is now my third pair and I have to say, I've been impressed with the quality, especially for the sale price (they generally retail in the $150-ish range). I find my feet easily prone to blisters and I wore this pair all day long with no issues. I appreciate that they sell narrow and wide widths, as well. Since I have relatively narrow feet, I can order narrow sizes on clearance when all the medium sizes have sold out. Tip: When ordering narrow widths, I've discovered going up about a half size can help.

Friday was a good consignment store shopping day. This is why I like going - the inventory is always a surprise. I found these Louboutin Decoltissimo's for not-too-much money (relatively speaking), they happen to fit perfectly, and they're all broken in, ready-to-wear! I found the original receipt in the box - an inside peek to the history of these shoes. They were purchased at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills, CA, in 2006. How they made their way across the country to Atlanta, I don't know. But there was also a handwritten note which said,

"E, I know you are the globetraveler with so many different

currencies - how you can keep them apart. Love, B"

I haven't formally introduced you to my new friend Chloé Paraty. Since I started following The Chloe Conspiracy a few years ago, I've been coveting this bag. It's perfect for me because: A) it's not covered in tons of tacky logos, B) it has both shoulder straps and handles, C) it looks the same from the front and the back, and D) it's a neutral, go-with-everything color. After actively scouring the internets for over 9 months for a pre-owned Paraty at a reasonable price (for me), I finally got lucky at the end of December and snagged this one! As you've seen, we've been best friends ever since!

Since I've been in clutch-making mode for a little while, I found this fun lizard-embossed red vinyl at the fabric store when I went to pick up more interfacing. I've never sewn on vinyl before and I'm impressed with the way it came out. I chose the "baguette" size for this one. Total cost was less than $20! :-)

DIY Style: Simple Hem Jobs

I know we've all, at some point in our fashion-minded lives, needed something hemmed! Whether it's a fab thrift find or a pricier goody, garments are often not ready-to-wear, at least not on my short frame. Sewing is not the daunting task some people think it is - it's actually quite easy, especially if you already own a sewing machine, plus it's money-saving. Here, I will show you my basic method for hemming these $5 each thrifted skirts via machine. You can also do this with hand-sewing, or even using iron-on fabric tape.

I originally bought these skirts in October with the intention of making them into Fall minis, but alas, time slipped away and it didn't happen. I'm starting out the new year by crossing some projects off my to-do list!

Step 1

Determine the length of the skirt and simply cut off the excess. I cut the linings approximately one inch shorter. Note: the red skirt originally had a back vent, but the length I wanted was above the vent, so I just cut that part off. It became a non-issue.

Step 2

Next, I serged the raw edge of the skirts. This is totally optional, as most people don't own sergers. You could also choose an overlock stitch if your regular sewing machine has that option. Lastly, you can always turn under the raw edge at 1/2 inch, then turn the hem under again at whatever length you'd like. Just remember to account for that extra 1/2 inch when cutting off the hem. Note: I already had black thread in my serger and chose not to re-thread the machine with red thread for the red skirt because I didn't want to take the time required for that.

Step 3

Pressing garments should never be deleted when sewing - this is what gives seams professional quality finishes! Here, I'm turning the lining raw edge under about 1/2 inch and pressing. Then, I'm turning it under again, about 1/2 inch, and pressing and pinning. For the skirt fabric, I turned under approximately 1 and 1/2 inch and pressed and pinned. Please excuse my vintage 1970s ironing board. ;-)

Step 4
Now I'm running the lining through the machine with a simple straight stitch.

Step 5

This is usually a hand-sewn step. I whip-stitch the hem by picking up only 1-2 threads on the underside of the skirt, so that the thread isn't visible from the outside of the skirt.

That's all there is to it! Very simple and it really shouldn't take more than an hour to do one skirt. I hope this tutorial helps and let me know if there are any questions.

I'm starting out the new year with a vintage coat - but not just any. This houndstooth coat was made by my grandmother for my mother in the 1960s! It even had a matching shift dress which has long since disappeared, but the coat stuck around. This Fall, My mom and I stumbled upon this Ralph Lauren ad below while browsing a fashion magazine - the coat is practically the same! The last time I wore it was in 2004. I hope your New Year has started with a blast!

Only yesterday did I realize today, Saturday, was the last day of 2011. For weeks now, I thought New Year's Eve was on Sunday, ooops! Anyways, NYE, to me, is always appropriate for sequins, heels, and glamour! 2011 has been one of my better years and I'm brightly looking forward to 2012 - I can't wait to see what it has to offer. Readers, be safe and have a fabulous New Year! PS - I purchased this black faux fur jacket at H&M from the clearance rack for $30 in 2005. I wore to watch the NYE Ball Drop in Times Square to ring in 2006.

I feel like my blog started going in the directions I always wanted it to this year. The acquisition of a digital SLR camera [wow, great price on Amazon] and 50mm f/1.8 lens, courtesy of my dad (early Christmas present), and a willing friend who's handy with a camera has certainly helped. I also have started to refine and evolve my style and I've gotten a lot more comfortable with accessories - I hope to keep this up in 2012.

Brrr, we've finally received what feels like winter in Georgia. I think this bright red coat I purchased several years ago (on sale, no less) brightens up an otherwise dreary day! I hope you had a fabulous Christmas holiday!

Can I say how excited I am about these Ann Taylor knit pants? I generally avoid leggings (besides my denim leggings) because of my wide hips and short legs, but these are a thicker, nicer knit with pockets (there's a cool side zipper pocket that's not visible in the pictures). They're comfy, fitted, and stylish (sings praises for the petite sizing) - what more could I need? Oh yes, other colors - I need them in more colors.

I'm new to the tights with socks with boots trend - I like it! These over-the-knee wool socks (shown here folded and scrunched down) I purchased through Asos last year have given me lots of use. I've worn them with boots alone, no tights, multiple times but with tights, they keep my legs and toes extra toasty in the frostier weather.

I'm sure most of us are saying, How is it December already? I feel the same way, especially trying to catch up from my lack of Thanksgiving holiday - European vacations are quite vigorous. Anyways, it's back to reality and this includes Christmas tree shopping! I especially love getting real trees because when I was a kid, we always had the nasty, dusty, 15+ year old fake tree that sat in the attic 11 months of the year, and when we finally pulled it down, it smelled gross. I refuse to do that again, haha! I'm wearing one of my favorite coats - I purchased this last year and I love the nipped waist, pleated skirt, asymmetrical hemline, and laced-up back. It's unfortunately out of stock at Asos, but readers, if you find something similar, let me know!

My Return From Europe

Europe was amazing and exhausting! It was freezing and chilly....and frequently dreary. But I am glad that it did not rain. Here's my recap in pictures!

We flew to Amsterdam and arrived Saturday morning. From there, we checked into our hotel and went to a local park, Vondel Park. We also explored Amsterdam that day, including going to the Van Gogh museum. There was a note in our hotel room letting us know that the local transportation would be on strike on Sunday, and after seeing everyone in Amsterdam riding a bike, we decided that we would rent bikes on Sunday.

Of course, I haven't ridden a bike in years and was very wobbly. It's not my best sport.

On Sunday, we biked all over Amsterdam, trying to avoid cars and pedestrians. I preferred the deserted side streets where I wasn't likely to run over anyone with my bike. At least because of the strike, I didn't have to worry about avoiding the trams. We biked to the Secret Annex of Anne Frank (center of picture). That was amazing - I haven't read her diary since middle school and had forgotten that her father was the only person to survive. The building is now a museum and visitors can walk through the hidden bookcase to see where her and her family lived for a couple of years, hiding from the German Nazis.

The weather was cold and dreary, but despite my initial apprehensiveness, I had fun biking along the canals! On sunday night we caught the overnight train to Prague, Czech Republic. The train stopped in Düsseldorf and Berlin, along the way. We arrived in Prague and settled into our gorgeous 5-star hotel. Prague is inexpensive and the hotel cost us only $50 per person per night! I loved the red stairwell.

While in Prague, we wandered all over the city and saw the Astronomical Clock in the main town square and walked across the Charles Bridge. We also did a night time ghost tour that went through the Old Town and underneath into the medieval torture chambers - but we did not see any ghosts.

After two nights in Prague, we took the early train to Munich, Germany, to spend the afternoon/evening. We drank huge 1 liter beers at the Hofbräuhaus and sat with boys in the band who wore lederhosens as we listened to traditional Bavarian music.

We stayed at the Hofbräuhaus for 5 hours then had to continue on our way via train to Salzburg, Austria, where we were scheduled for the Sound of Music tour! Wednesday morning was spent singing along with Julie Andrews in one of the 20th century's most beloved films. We saw many filming locations throughout the town and up in the Austrian mountains.

Here is the glass gazebo where they filmed the song, "I am 16 going on 17..." and also the Mirabell gardens, where they filmed the "Do Re Mi" song.

After Salzburg, we had a quick train ride to Vienna, but only stayed one night, as we were headed to Budapest, Hungary, on Friday. I liked the horse drawn carriages in Vienna.

In Budapest, we stayed at a hotel that is connected to thermal hot baths, built at the beginning of the 20th century. As hotel guests, we got free entry. These baths were quite relaxing after all the running around we were doing, but we had forgotten about the European lack of modesty and custom of nude bathing. We, however, chose to keep our suits on.

Saturday in Budapest, we explored the city. The picture of us with the maps pretty much sums up our trip, haha, but we managed to find our way everywhere we needed to go. The picture below that was taken on the Buda side of the Danube River, overlooking the Pest side.

Finally, Saturday afternoon was our flight to Paris with an overnight layover. The main thing I wanted to see on this trip was the Eiffel Tower and it was amazing - so much bigger than I imagined and so beautiful lit up at night. And, it glitters on the hour - I loved it!

The last place we went for the night was the Moulin Rouge, but we didn't see a show. The next day we got up to see the Notre Dame Cathedral, then headed for the Paris airport. Several free glasses of Delta wine and 3 movies later, we landed safely in Atlanta! Now it's back to reality - preparing for a holiday dance performance and Christmas-time!

The time has come for another trip to Europe (see last year's trip here and here)! This one was my friend's idea, as we both turned 30 this year. Four of us ladies are headed to 7 cities in 10 days; quite the adventure filled voyage. My friend also suggested to bring carry-on bags only, so packing has been quite the challenge. Additionally, we're expecting temperatures in the 20s-50s, brrr! I can't wait to bring you pictures when I return. But I have to be honest, this is an in-and-out, on-the-go, get-er-done kind of trip. I'm not bringing lots of fancy clothes, valuables, or my nice camera. I'm actually looking forward to a low-key trip - fashionwise!

A Special Post: The Gentleman's Budget Makeover

I'd like to introduce my friend David, a former pro-am skateboarder who's slightly fashion challenged for the real world. As what happens to most of us in our 20s, we grow up and have to get real jobs. After getting laid-off and job searching for six months, David's finally landed himself a job in corporate America. Gone are the days of chilling at home in lounge clothes - it's time to go to work! And with that comes a new wardrobe. While he rules the bowls at the skate park, he's clueless and has little patience for shopping. Since he's been so nice as to photograph most of my outfit posts lately, I'm helping him assimilate his professional wardrobe. Here we are documenting David's adventure into proper dress code on a budget!

With a tight budget, we started at Goodwill and other local thrift stores. We checked a few in the area and found several items. With David's 5'9" stature and slim build, most of the shirts were way too big. There was a huge selection of Medium through Extra-Large, but we need a Small for David, so we ended up with one thrifted dress shirt. I scoured the tie-rack and found two nice ones at Goodwill, and two nices ones (including a Christian Dior tie) at another thrift shop. Finally, we found two pair of pants in his size (and he found a reversible black/brown belt on his own).

These are some fabulous deals, but not enough to get him through a work week! Since we exhausted the stores in our area and were on a time constraint, the next stop was the outlet mall. We got lucky at the Saks outlet and found two Saks brand dress shirts, one Saks brand pair of pants and a pair of Cole Haan shoes. Heading over to Gap and Banana Republic, we picked up an additional pair of pants and another shirt.

So in total, David spent $257.86 + tax for 4 dress shirts, 4 dress pants, 4 ties, 1 reversible belt, and a pair of shoes. Not so bad, eh? We could've gotten more mileage from the thrift stores if David was much bigger, or interested in oversized pleated pants from the early '90s à la MC Hammer, but alas, I put him on a flat-front-pants-only diet which limited our selection, as well.

Outfit 1 Details

Shirt - Saks // Tie - Thrift // Pants - Express // Belt - Thrift // Shoes - Cole Haan

I thought this was a great shirt from Saks - it's 100% pima cotton with a subtle sateen woven stripe and coming in at less than $30. These pinstripe Express pants from the thrift store are 100% wool and in okay condition - I noticed a tiny hole near the hem and a hole is forming near one of the back pockets, but considering they were $2, they'll get him through a few weeks of work until he can find another pair. I love the color of this tie - it's a nice teal with neutral-hued stripes.

Outfit 2 Details

Shirt - Saks // Tie - Christian Dior // Pants - Express // Belt - Thrift // Shoes - Cole Haan

Here's one of our best finds. This Christian Dior tie was only $0.80 (yes, 80 cents!) at the thrift store. Wow! It's a fabulous shade of gray with navy, burgundy, and white stripes. It is paired with this Italian-made 2-ply cotton gray and white striped shirt from Saks. These thrifted Express pants are in good condition - a little fading is visible around the seams, but at $5, they'll get him through a few months of work.

Outfit 3 Details

Shirt - Banana Republic // Tie - Kenneth Cole // Pants - Saks // Belt - Thrift // Shoes - Cole Haan

Here's another great tie deal - I found this Kenneth Cole tie for $3 at Goodwill and it's in excellent condition. I've since decided that it's slightly dated in width and maybe some fashionable guy donated it because of that. I plan to make it narrower (another project added to the sewing to-do list). And the pants - I love the slim cut and they came in under $16 at Saks, wow!

Outfit 4 Details

Shirt - Thrift // Tie - Thrift // Pants - Gap // Belt - Thrift // Shoes - Cole Haan

Yes, we know the tie is tied a little too short in these pics. This last outfit incorporates a cognac-colored paisley tie I spotted for $0.80 and a $5 white dress shirt. We paired it with these cotton navy pin stripe pants from Gap, the thrifted belt, and the Cole Haan shoes.

So lastly, the lessons learned in thrifting:

1. Look for relevance. If it's dated from 15 years ago, you probably won't wear it. And I mean mostly yucky '80s and '90s stuff - prior to that, fantastic vintage items are fair game!

2. Look for flaws. Evaluate the condition of a garment against the price. If there's a few minor flaws and the price is super cheap, it might be worth it (at least until a replacement can be purchased).

3. Consider sizing. Is it going to cost a lot to tailor or hem a garment? Can you alter it yourself or do you have a friend who will do it for cheap/free? Weigh tailoring costs against garment condition and price.

4. Consider your time frame against your budget. Do you have time to drive all over the city searching different thrift stores? Sometimes ya just can't find anything good at a thrift store - it's a chance process. Do you have time to keep searching, or should you head to the mall/outlet?

5. Know when to purchase new. We looked for shoes at the thrift store but there were slim pickings in David's size and they weren't in great condition. We were running out of time and found these $200 soft leather Cole Haan shoes with leather soles for less than $100.

6. Consider friends and family as resources. Maybe someone just cleaned out their closet and has a bag of donations. It can't hurt to ask, especially if they are your size.

Now David has enough outfit essentials to mix and match throughout a work week, or at least until he builds enough budget to buy more clothes. Readers, can you give any more suggestions? Did we miss anything? A coat and suit are still on the list. Thanks for reading!

I found this dress at Nordstrom Rack and thought, "Hmmmm, I own nothing like this and certainly nothing in this brick red-orange color." I tried it on not expecting to like it, but I surprised myself! It came home with me and I decided the shoulder seams needed to be taken up one inch, as the bust darts hit too low (checked off the list of sewing projects). I was also confused by the belt - it's attached in the back so I cannot move it around. Is it supposed to be tied like so? I used my square knot I learned while in Girl Scouts in the 1980s, lol!

Alas, our pleasant weather is holding out in Georgia, but I bet I won't be doing many more bare arms/legs posts! And lastly, I found this vintage suede bag by Paloma Picasso (Pablo Picasso's daughter!) at the same thrift shop, Agora, I found the Ann Taylor silk skirt and suede jacket. If you live in and around the Athens/Atlanta area, I high recommend checking it out. They've also got lots of Vuitton and Chanel bags behind the counter.

Would you believe I found this vintage Ann Taylor skirt for less than $20 in the same thrift shop I found the jacket from Sunday's post? It's 100% dupioni silk and the tag (and sizing) looks like it's from the '70s or '80s, but I'm not sure. Regardless, I thought the pretty bright teal hue would be a welcome addition to my closet of many neutral-shaded skirts. And a sidenote: yes, my outfit was inspired by Gucci's Spring 2011 collection!

I love vintage leather jackets and they seem to love me. I found this fabulous suede one at a thrift shop a few weeks ago when I visited my alma mater in Athens, GA. For half of this weekend, I took a quick jaunt about an hour north of Atlanta to a touristy and slightly cheesy, but quaint, Bavarian-themed town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The next few picture sets will feature various locations in Helen, GA!
